1. A ceiling should always be white.

Because of the highest reflective value and neutral nature of white paint people are tempted to use it as their ceiling color however this is not the last option. A darker color ceiling can also be very effective in creating drama and illusion of space. ......

2. An all white room seems larger.

People often think that painting the room in white color or entirely with the same color will make the room look bigger however this myth has been proven wrong .Painting one wall as an accent wall makes the room look not only larger but also makes it aesthetically pleasing.

3. Trim must always be painted white.

Trims are normally painted white so that they can easily go through out the house however painting the trims in different color and then applying to the house can give the house new dimension and can create an accent affect through out the house.

4. Only certain colors go together.

All colors can be combined in certain ways. This can be seen with following pictures where we can see how different colors are combined in the same room.

5. Paint colors must match furniture-exactly.

The more effective way of painting the walls is to paint them with the lighter or darker shade of the dominant color in the room. This results in monochromatic rooms which is one of the most favourite paint trends by many designers. How ever using different color than furniture can also be effective if chosen wisely.

6. Pink is for girls; blue is for boys.

This stereotype is actually now almost extinct. People are using almost all bright colors for their kid’s bedrooms.

7. There should be only three patterns per room.

People often limitize their minds for choosing patterns for the room’s décor however again it’s not true. Freedom of minds has resulted in the inventions of new design ideas so feel free to pick more than one patterns. The only thing that matters is how you co-ordinate with your patterns around the room.

8. Always decorate around the sofa.

Sofa is most of the time is more expensive than any other furniture piece in the room so people normally paint their walls with the same color as of the sofa. However more effective colors can be applied by selecting any motif of the sofa or by putting some accent color accessories in the room and then painting the wall that the color of the accent accessories color.

9. Some colors are taboo.

There are some colors which were considered as taboo in the past for example black, red and brown however these are the colors that most of the designers are using today to create minimalist and contemporary designs. These colors are very effective to create drama and unusual affect in any design concept.

10. Color continuity means the same color through out.

Color continuity doesn’t mean to use the same color through out the house. However a more strong co-ordination can be done by creating some relationship between the adjoining room colors and furniture.

11. A long narrow hallway is made shorter by painting the ends dark.

In fact the opposite of the above myth is true. By painting the hallway with the same color make it look narrow. How ever painting one wall in lighter color and the other with darker color of the same shade creates the illusion of wideness.

12. The dining room and living room must be the same color.

Dining room and living room are often treated with the same color but the fact is that more strong co-ordination can be done by using some common motif, pattern or style. Complementary colors can also be used if there is small separating wall between the two rooms.
